A Necessary Deferment

Parents can now sigh in relief as the opening of classes for public and private kindergarten, elementary and high school students for Academic Year 2020 – 2021 is deferred to October 5, 2020.

After weeks of insistence from the Department of Education Secretary Leonor Briones to begin the academic year on August 24, she has come to a realization that it’s not yet the time to commence the classes.

Netizens were pleading to Sec. Briones to postpone the August 24 opening of classes because of the hardships they’re experiencing due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Families are financially constrained because of business closures and layoffs of employees. Beginning the academic year at an earlier date will cause severe headaches to their breadwinners, who are already struggling to meet their daily needs.

Several news reports have exposed the unpreparedness of our educational system for this school year. Teachers are having a hard time connecting to the internet. Schools are puzzled as to how they can constantly reproduce modules for thousands of students. Now that the DepEd has 42 additional days to prepare, it is expected that they’ll use their time to improve what needs to be improved. There are a lot of flaws that need to be resolved. This is the time for DepEd to shine. Show to us that you can rise to the challenge of the ‘new normal’ of education.
