Death of a YouTuber: Buknoy Edition

Buknoy Glamurrr, a YouTube influencer, recently made headlines for belittling a tricycle driver.

The criticisms online were swift. Fellow influencers reprimanded him. YouTube users unsubscribed his channel and disliked his videos. His reputation is now under attack.

Ever since I wrote the article “Death of a YouTuber” in April, the arguments I laid forth had never been more factual.

In the article, I wrote that some vloggers are using the YouTube platform to be involved in controversies because their videos translate to money. “To reach the peak of fame, some vloggers subscribe to dubiousness that often crosses the line of sensitivity. And because controversies garner widespread attention, their videos receive massive amount of views that translates to massive amount of cash.”

It is shameful that people dubbed as ‘influencers’ can’t use their fame to inspire, entertain and, somehow, educate their audiences.

I also wrote that the users are the real losers because they continuously watch ‘crappy and senseless content.’

The apology video of Mr. Glamurrr garnered more than 500,000 views in less than a day. The apology video was not really an apology, but a non-denial denial. Since the public would be interested on his take after his statement was widely ridiculed, the apology video would surely trend online, no matter what he said. And because the video was trending, YouTube would reward that with thousands of pesos in cash.

The incident involving Mr. Glamurrr was only one of the numerous controversies that netizens feasted online. It is shameful that people dubbed as ‘influencers’ can’t use their fame to inspire, entertain, and, somehow, educate their audiences. They should leave YouTube until they can get their act together again.
